III. ADMONISHING MINISTRY IN THE WORD (1 Thess. 5:12d).

“…to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you.” What is the pastor’s ministry of admonishing?Instructing in the truths of God’s Word.

What should be the content of this instruction?

 

A.  Sound instructions in doctrine to all believers (Titus 2:1-8)

B.  Sound instructions to the rich (1 Tim.6:17-19).

 

Now before we come to a close, let’s make sure we understand the complete request.  Notice 1 Thess. 5:12-13…

“And we request or urge or beseech you, brethren, to know or recognize or appreciate those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.” Notice…

The sequence: “recognize them, esteem them, and submit to them.” Vs. 13, says to the flock… you are “to esteem them.” In other words, in addition to knowing your pastor, you are to think rightly and lovingly of him, not because of his charm or personality, but because of the fact that a pastor-teacher works for the Chief Shepherd as His special servant. The church is also “to submit” to the pastor-teacher’s leadership so that “peace” prevails in the church. Thus, the admonition,“Be at peace among yourselves.”
