SERIES:       A Celebration of the Biblical Gospel

TITLE: The Compelling Reasons for Preaching the Gospel - Part 2

TEXT: Titus 1:1-4

PURPOSE: To challenge the hearers to take the task of proclaiming or preaching the gospel to everyone seriously.

INTRODUCTION AND REVIEW

Titus 1:1-4 unfolds a tremendous definition of Christian ministry. This ministry definition emphasizes evangelism, edification, and encouragement.

This passage spells out the nature of Paul’s service as an apostle of Jesus Christ. He effectively proclaimed:

A.   Biblical Salvation – he expounds God’s purpose to save the elect by the gospel.

B.   Biblical Sanctification – he declares God’s purpose to build up the saved by the Word of God.

C.   Biblical Glorification – he celebrates God’s purpose to bring believers to eternal glory.

And so the nature of Paul’s ministry reminds us of what we must keep doing – WE MUST KEEP PREACHING A PURE GOSPEL!

REVIEW: We must BELIEVE BIBLICALLY/CORRECTLY…

I believe that the task of preaching unfolds as follows: the gospel must be preached so that God’s elect can hear it and believe, the gospel must be preached so the saved can apply it and grow in godliness, and the gospel must be preached so the saved can be encouraged by it in times of difficulties.

Let’s begin by affirming that…

I. THE GOSPEL MUST BE PREACHED SO GOD’S ELECT CAN HEAR IT AND BELIEVE (Titus 1:1)

This passage has a two-fold thrust. Namely, God’s sovereign act of determining and drawing His own.

A.   God’s sovereign act of determining in the past those He would

Redeem (vv.1,2). Paul speaks of “the faith of God’s elect.”

1.   Question – who is God’s elect?

2.   Answer – those who have been graciously chosen for salvation (Eph.1:4)

3.   Confirming passages:

a.    John 6:37, 65

b.   John 15:16

c.    2 Thess. 2:13,14

d.   2 Tim. 2:10

e.   Titus 1:2,3

f.     John 17:2

g.    Eph. 1:3-14

           B. God’s sovereign act of drawing the elect in the present (v.3)

1.   Question – when was the promise made?

2.   Answer – before time began.

3.   The promise was made to God the Son.

a.    Before time began (Titus 1:2c).

b.   Manifested through preaching (Titus 1:3a).

c.    According to the commandment of God our Savior (Titus 1:3b).

In eternity past, God chose and registered all the names of His

Elect in the Book of Life.

1.   Daniel 12:1

2.   Luke 10:20

3.   Rev. 3:5

4.   Rev. 13;8

5.   Rev. 17:8

6.   Rev. 20:12,15

7.   Rev. 21:27

8.   Rev. 22:19

The gospel must be preached, then, so God’s elect can hear, repent, and place their complete trust in Christ alone.  In this first task, our emphasis is the proclamation of the gospel of salvation - God's purpose to save the elect by the gospel of Justification by faith. Thus, removing the penalty of sin.
